Tooth Decay

The enamel covering the part of a tooth above the gum line is the hardest tissue in the body. It is 95 percent mineral, with a high concentration of calcium. Tooth decay, also called "cavities" or caries, results when the enamel is dissolved by acids. These acids are produced by bacteria living in the oral cavity, particularly Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli. These bacteria are always present. In fact, an average human mouth contains a number of microorganisms larger than the entire population of the Earth.

The acid that causes tooth decay is a byproduct of bacterial consumption of sugar. When a person ingests foods containing sugar, the bacteria begin producing acids within minutes. Immediately removing sugar from the mouth after eating by brushing and flossing goes a long way toward preventing tooth decay. Unfortunately, that isn't often convenient in today's lifestyle.
